Do you fancy keeping chickens - or showing your sheep? We’ve got just the courses for you. And, I know it’s maybe a bit early to be thinking about the autumn, but just to keep you informed I’ve included here the dates and course details for our next Locker Hooking and Weaving courses.
Please note that from September 1st 2009 most one day courses will be charged at £24. Please check specific details for each course.

To book your place on a course please send me:

1. Your name, address, phone number and membership number.

2. The number, name and date of the course you wish to attend.

3. A cheque made out to DASH for the full amount per person attending and a stamped addressed envelope for each course (if you’re booking more than one) for the return of your receipt, course voucher and instructions.

Children are allowed on some courses at half price. Please check before booking.

Please note: if you need to cancel your place on a course, and you hope for a refund of your fee, then I do need at least two clear weeks’ notice so that we can try to fill the place. Likewise, please let me have your cheque and sae at least 2 weeks before a course to confirm your place. Thank you.

297/2 Bee keeping (FULL)
A good introductory course from an experienced bee keeper covering equipment, costs, benefits, products, getting started, books and stings!

287/20 – Introduction to Poultry Keeping
This course, for beginners, will cover choosing a breed, buying birds, housing, feeding, handling, care & management, incubation/rearing chicks and commonly encountered problems. The course will focus on chickens and ducks.

300/11 - Chainsaw Competence – 2 places remaining
A 2 day course for the amateur chainsaw operator. Covering maintenance and safe log cutting. A LANTRA Certificate will be issued on successful completion of the course.

291/8 An Introduction to Showing Sheep – DATE CHANGE
A lighthearted introduction to preparing sheep for showing. The course will cover selection, feeding, grooming, halter training plus advice on how you and your sheep should behave when you get to the show.

246/52 - Bee Handling - full - reserve list only
A follow on from our introductory course with an experienced bee keeper covering how to handle and manage your bees. This course has a practical element which requires full protective clothing, including minimally a veil and smock.

303/26 Vegetable and Fruit Growing
This course follows progress in the garden from our earlier courses, looking at the progress from sowing and propagation to planting and continuation of cropping throughout the year outside and in the polytunnel. This is a good time to address any problems in culture that we encounter during the early part of the season, especially the problems of pest and disease control. Also planting, cultivation, rotation and nutrition will be on the agenda. The course is designed for the home or small producer.

A 2 day course chainsaw course covering felling small trees following on from the Chainsaw Competence course. A LANTRA Certificate will be issued on successful completion of the course.

293/54 – Know your Boer Goat
The fast-growing British Boer goat has been specially selected for healthy, low cholesterol lean meat production. This course offers an introduction to goat keeping and covers how to choose and care for your goats including foot trimming, feeding, condition scoring etc. Kidding may be covered if practicable with the timing of the course.

289/59 Food Hygiene
Legislation states that all Food Handlers must receive Food Hygiene Training commensurate with their work. The Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering is a recognized qualification that meets this requirement. The course is a one day programme covering the following topics: Legislation; Food Safety Hazards; Temperature Control; Refrigeration, chilling and cold holding; Cooking, hot holding and reheating; Principles of safe food storage; Cleaning; Food Handling; Food Premises and equipment. This one day course is designed to give the candidate general knowledge of Food Hygiene principles. It does not go in to great depths on industry specific subjects, for example egg/meat production, but, following the course, if you required further information on specific subjects then the tutor would be happy to advise you on where to look for help & advice.

302/47 – Tractor & Machinery Maintenance
This course will cover the basic health and maintenance of your tractor including fuel, electrical and hydraulic systems. It will also address maintenance of common farm machinery such as hay mowers, turners, bailers and trailers – and is just in time for this year's harvest!

298/28 Herbal Medicine and Relaxation at Home
The course will consider herbs that can be safely used as remedies at home and will include ointment making. We will be in the tunnel, herb garden and workshop. The afternoon session will include the use of herbs for relaxation and the participants will learn how to give and receive a herbal neck and shoulder massage.

294/48 – Introduction to Sheepdog Training
If you have a sheepdog or are thinking of getting a pup then come and learn the basics of how to make man's best friend into man's best assistant.

304/55 Locker Hooking
This is a great way of using your sheep’s wool, or any left-over fabric you might have, to make lovely rugs and mats. The results are impressive and there is no need to spin the wool first. You can make coasters, place mats, casserole and teapot stands out of fabric and floor mats, rugs and cushion covers from wool or you can use the same technique to create wall-hangings. It is easy to learn, relaxing and enjoyable.

305/56 Weaving
An introduction to weaving using frame looms and table looms. The course is a basic introduction to tapestry weaving, learning techniques for weaving a variety of patterns. You can also try your hand at weaving on a large floor loom.

This 2 day practical course gives the opportunity to learn how to erect and hang a field gate together with how to erect strained wire stock/rabbit fencing.

This course teaches you how to make sausages at home using equipment available in the average domestic kitchen.

296/49 - Cattle on your Smallholding
An introduction to managing cattle on your smallholding. The course will cover how to choose your breed along with the basics of feeding and housing indoors/outside.
